The vacuum assisted shift was also called fingertip gear shift by Chevrolet. All that was required is to extend two fingers to move the lever. That is why the original shift knob was flat on the end, It also had a very short throw from gear to gear, about two inches. A conventional shift lever would move six inches or more and required the hand to be removed from the steering wheel to operate.
